This dramedy, set in an idyllic corner of Jerusalem, opens as a bomb explodes nearby. Faris, an Arab American, is writing in a café when Bony Marie, a refugee from the world of American rock ‘n roll, happens by, dragging a Holy Land souvenir: half the blown-up bus stop. And so it begins. While the existing relationships and the new ones that form are testament to the tensions in a city as wholly volatile as it is magically holy, this story is more about the people on the next pina (corner) than the politics in the morning papers.

When college baseball pitcher Robin receives an offer to join the major leagues, it conjures up the voice of Tommy, a Japanese-American girl from his adolescent past. Their courtship with each other and America’s favorite pastime is interwoven with flashes of East meets West: baseball greats Sandy Koufax and Sadaharu Oh, Japanese Haiku master Basho and the precariousness of boy meets remarkable girl. A radio ball is a pitch so fast, you don’t see it but you hear it. Robin can no longer see his dear friend, but hears her uncompromising voice and channels the inspiration behind it.
